Clime, Wolves Stymie IceHogs, 4-1

ROCKFORD, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves bagged a season-most four goals and goaltender Matt Climie posted a career-high 47 saves to lift the Wolves to a 4-1 Illinois Lottery Cup victory over the Rockford IceHogs at the BMO Harris Bank Center Saturday night.

Forwards Mike Duco (G, 2A), Bill Sweatt (G, A) and Dean Strong (2A) each posted multiple-points for the Wolves, which won their second-consecutive game after starting the season on a four-game winless streak.

Chicago (2-2-0-2) opened scoring at 5:50 of the first period when defenseman Yann Sauve’s one-timer from the near point deflected off an IceHogs defender and past Rockford netminder Alexander Salak.

The Wolves doubled their lead when Duco sent a shot towards the net and the puck inadvertently deflected off the skate of Sweatt and into the back of the net as he was passing by the top of the crease at 6:16 of the second period.

Defenseman Dustin Friesen put the Wolves on top 3-0 at 7:33 of the third period when his one-timer from the top of the far circle sailed over the glove of Salak.

Salak (0-2-0) posted 14 saves on 17 shots.

Rockford (3-3-0-0) ended Climie’s (1-1-0) shutout bid while on the power-play at 11:20 of the final frame. Climie stopped defenseman Brian Fahey’s shot from the point, but he gave up a rebound and left wing Philippe Paradis poked home the puck as it laid in the crease.

Duco sealed the win for Chicago with an empty net tally with 2:05 remaining in the game.

The Wolves travel to Peoria for an Illinois Lottery Cup contest against the Rivermen at 7 p.m. Sun., Oct. 23 at Carver Arena.
